Flood Risk in Hillingdon

Hillingdon Council is susceptible to a number of different sources of flooding, including rivers, surface water, ordinary watercourses, groundwater, reservoirs and sewers.

Within its boundaries lie the River Colne and River Crane catchments, which incorporate the River Pinn and Yeading Brooks, East and West Arm and significant lengths of ordinary watercourses.

The Council has also identified large areas as being at risk from surface water The London Borough of Hillingdon is a land locked Borough with local watercourses affected by  fluvial flood risk.

It is identified that flooding from main rivers could potentially affect over 5,532 (Provided by the Environment Agency in 2016) people in the borough and potentially surface water could affect 29,300 residential properties and 1,300 commercial properties (Data taken from the London Borough of Hillingdon Surface Water Management Plan).

In most cases in Hillingdon flooding is a result of complex interactions between sources.

The local watercourses within the Borough are:-

  1. a) River Colne (including the tributaries of the Frays River and New Years Greene Bourne);
  2. b) River Crane (including the Yeading Brook);
  3. c) River Pinn;
  4. d) Duke of Northumberland River & Longford River;
  5. e) Grand Union Canal;

London Borough of Hillingdon Flood and Water Management

The Flood and Water Management Act 2010 introduced new responsibilities to different bodies in order to help try and clarify who was responsible for different issues.

LBH in its role as Lead Local Flood Authority was given the lead for managing flooding from surface water, groundwater and from ordinary watercourses. It is also required to investigate those sources of flood risk.

Reporting a flood in Hillingdon

The London Borough of Hillingdon is required to undertake investigations on significant flood events under the Flood and Water Management Act and the Flood Risk Regulations.

Should you have any questions please contact the Flooding Team through the Contact Centre on 01895 556000 or send an email to: flooding@hillingdon.gov.uk or alternatively report the flood by using the flood form to report an event.

Alternatively contact the Environment Agency on their 24/7 incident reporting line on 0800 80 70 60. They have officers on standby 24/7 to assess and attend reports of blockages in main rivers. They also carry out practice clearance of specific river control structures and hotspots prior to forecasted heavy rainfall events.

Flood Investigation report 28th July 2014

In summary, a large number of roads were temporarily flooded, some of which were impassable as a result, including key infrastructure such as the A40. London Underground train stations and lines were also closed off in the Hillingdon area. In Hillingdon approximately 29 properties flooded internally.  Due to the severity of the flood, some of the residents were placed in temporary accommodation.   Roads affected by this event included:
